He is the product of two immigrants who left their home country of Cameroon and moved to Texas with the hope of living the American Dream. During the general election, he was invited to Charlottesville, Virginia during the summer of 2008 to help register voters, canvass, and make calls.&nbsp;He was tasked with canvassing in some rural parts of the state and during one of those days, he had a voter let out their dogs to attack him. Not deterred, he kept showing up and helping voters. This is who Thierry is. Never backing down from a challenge.Thierry received his Bachelors Degree from McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. While attending McMurry University, he took a year off school to work on Wendy Davis’s Gubernatorial campaign. He was a field organizer in Houston where he oversaw 37 precincts including the historic Acres Home neighborhood. I’m running for the U.S. Senate because Texas needs a New Way Forward. That means being open and honest about what I believe. This election is too important for anyone to run without laying out exactly where they stand on the issues. When I head to Washington, DC, I will put serving everyday Texans above everything. Our Campaign’s Top Issues

<h3>Everyday Texans are struggling.</h3>The Person:&nbsp;I’m the child of immigrants. My parents were earning&nbsp;$200 a month in Cameroon before coming to America for a better life.&nbsp; When they got here, my dad started as a cashier at a gas station in Southwest Houston and my mom worked at Dillard’s. We were never wealthy. 29 years later, I am running for the U.S. Senate.&nbsp;The Principle:&nbsp;These 4 Bible Verses help shape my economic policy:Proverbs 14:23: All hard work leads to profit, but mere talk leads to poverty.&nbsp;Psalm 128:1-2: You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.&nbsp;Deuteronomy 24:14: Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.&nbsp; Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it.&nbsp; Otherwise they may cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin.Proverbs 3:27-28: Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you.The Bible states that work is good. We should be encouraging people to work and celebrating them for their hard work. A major part of celebrating someone for their work is by compensating them for their labor. Hard work is supposed to lead to profit, not stagnation or debt.&nbsp;The Problem:Everyday Texans are struggling. 40% of Texas make under $15 an hour and 2 million Texans don’t make a livable wage. Too many politicians in Austin and Washington care more about tax breaks for their corporate donors than about the ability of working families to not just get by, but to thrive. The average worker is being taken advantage of by big businesses that are making record profits but are not allowing everyday folks to reap the benefits of their hard work. We need to fix how our economic policies treat working people.The Policy Proposal:<ol><li>Over 2 million Texans who work at least 40 hours a week don’t earn a living wage. I believe that if you work 40 hours a week, you should be able to earn enough to take care of your basic needs such as paying your mortgage, buying food for the family, and accessing medicine for your health. Even after that, you should have enough left over to save for the future.</li><li>Our state’s minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. 40% of Texans make under $15 dollars an hour. I will introduce legislation to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and connect that minimum wage with inflation to raise the baseline for Texas families.</li><li>The success of the companies shouldn’t just benefit CEOs and shareholders. It should benefit the workers that are largely the reason for the profit increases. The CEO-to-average worker ratio in our biggest businesses is 356 to 1. I’ll introduce legislation that taxes companies that have a CEO-to-average worker pay ratio of more than 100 to 1. If CEOs of big businesses can give themselves pay increases while making record profit, the workers at the same company should receive a pay increase as well.</li><li>Small businesses employ 47.1% of our non-government workers in Texas and maintaining a small business is getting harder by the day. There are many resources the federal government offers, but just because something is available, doesn’t mean it's accessible. When I’m elected, I will work hard to connect Texas’s small businesses with federal resources to ensure they have the capital they need to keep our communities thriving.</li><li>We must create economic opportunities for everyday Texans and working families to ensure they can keep as much money in their pockets as possible. Our economy should be focused on investing in American businesses and workers.</li></ol>

An Economy That Works For Working People

The Person:As a man, I’ve enjoyed great privilege throughout my life. I’ve also witnessed how women have been treated unequally, in ways both large and small, whether that’s in a meeting where a woman came up with an idea but a man took the credit or when women are not paid equally to a man even though they do the same job. The women in my life, from my amazing mother to my inspiring wife Gloria have helped reveal other areas where there are inconsistencies and disparities.&nbsp;The Principle:God created men and women equally. Women deserve to be treated with the same amount of dignity and respect as men. Proverbs 31:10-31 highlights the totality of women which includes being a business owner, having the ability to buy land, among other things that men can do without being questioned or marginalized.The Problem:Unfortunately, women are not treated fairly in our society. That’s true in business, true in education and it’s for sure true in our politics. The decisions our politicians make directly and indirectly reinforce a belief that men are superior to women and that has resulted in major disparities between men and women in society. Too often politicians pick an issue where they believe they can get votes from women by simply framing themselves as being pro-woman based on a single value. An example of this is how politicians in my party talk about abortion. Republicans do this when it comes to framing themselves as the pro-family party.&nbsp;The Policy Proposal:The first thing I believe we should do is respect women in all their totality. Women should earn equal pay. There should be no barriers to them receiving an education, buying a home, or doing anything else in life they desire simply because of their gender. Because of these existing disparities, there are some key areas where if elected, I would work to ensure that our nation’s policies are equalizing us all in society, not holding women back:&nbsp;<ol><li>There is no paid leave policy in Texas. Women who have children are not guaranteed any protections after pregnancy. I will introduce legislation to implement a national paid leave policy. Data shows this will help women better recover from their pregnancy and leads to better mental and physical health outcomes for women and children.</li><li>Women in the state of Texas make approximately $40,000 a year on average, which is 20% less than men. The disparity in pay applies to men and women who work in the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://blog.dol.gov/2023/03/14/5-fast-facts-the-gender-wage-gap#:~:text=Stats.,for%20Black%20and%20Hispanic%20women.">same occupation</a>.&nbsp; I will work to pass legislation that protects women being retaliated against for having pay discussions, eliminates loopholes employers can use to avoid accountability and increases funding for more enforcement.</li><li>Texas women are the most uninsured women in the country. Health insurance should be guaranteed.</li><li>Texas leads the nation in rape offenses, and our state ranks in the top 11 in the country in Domestic Violence against Women rate. I’ll fight for legislation that increases the penalty for committing domestic violence and have stricter penalties for rape.</li></ol>

Women Deserve Better

<h4>Don’t let anyone tell you we can’t find a path forward on a just and equitable immigration policy.</h4>The Person:As a son of Cameroonian immigrants, immigration is an issue that I care about deeply. I’ve talked to my mom and dad often about their journey to the United States.&nbsp;The Principle:There are a couple of verses in the Bible that inform my views on immigration:The first is Deuteronomy 10:18-19 which states “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt.”The second verse is Romans 13:1 which emphasizes the importance of obeying laws.&nbsp;The Problem:Our immigration system is broken. There is no other way to say it. We need a complete overhaul for us to have a brighter future on this issue. We have an enforcement and humanitarian problem. The last time we passed a major immigration bill was in 1986 with the Immigration Reform and Control Act. Our system is old and inflexible and we have politicians that are more concerned with creating political theater and raising money on the issue than actually finding a solution.&nbsp; The Policy Proposal:&nbsp;A U.S. Senator from Texas should be leading the way on this issue. Our immigration system needs an overhaul. We don’t have to choose between having safe borders and valuing migrants. We can do BOTH.Our immigration challenges will be solved only by those who want to fix the problem. I do. I’ll introduce a comprehensive immigration bill that will be focused on achieving two goals: Securing Our Border and Valuing Migrants. These are some of the highlights of the legislation I would propose:&nbsp;We Must Value Migrants:1. Place undocumented immigrants living and working in the United States without a criminal record on a path to citizenship, including those brought to the United States as children.2. Texas is currently facing a labor shortage. If elected, I will work to pass a state-based guest-worker program in Congress so that those who come across can take positions in key Texas industries.3. Keep families whole by making sure families are not split up once they get to the border.&nbsp;4. Assign legal status to those who have been processed but still need to complete their cases. This encourages migrants to continue through the process while also helping our economy.We Must Secure Our Border:1. Add border patrol agents and enhance our tracking technology, cameras, and underground sensors.2. Increase the number of immigration judges and officers to efficiently process the 2.1 million backlog of cases.3. Establish regional processing centers in Central and South American countries.4. Create an automatic deportation rule for undocumented immigrants that commit violent crimes such as domestic violence, aggravated assault, among other violent crimes. This rule would include non-violent crimes like shoplifting and DUIs.

Fixing Our Immigration System

<h4>Rural Texas gets left behind and that has to stop.</h4>The Person:Though I was born and raised in Houston, I attended McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Abilene, if you don’t know it, is in West Texas! During my time in West Texas, I fell in love with the region and rural Texas in general. The people were incredibly warm and welcoming.&nbsp; One of the biggest lessons I learned during my time in Abilene was that even though there are some unique problems facing our rural communities, rural and urban Texans alike share the same values and want the same things.&nbsp;The Principle:As a servant, a part of my duty is to speak up for those who are voiceless and/or do not have an advocate (Proverbs 31:8-9). Rural Texas does not have a strong voice and advocate in the United States Senate. No human should feel like their home address determines how much respect and dignity they get from others.The Problem:Rural Texans are not inferior to urban Texans. But the unique issues facing rural parts of our state do not get the same attention as issues affecting our cities. That’s wrong. We need to deal with rural broadband access, child care and food deserts and much more.The Policy Proposal:<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.tchenkofortexas.com/rural-bill-of-rights">RURAL BILL OF RIGHTS</a>

Investing In Rural Texas

The Person: I have family members that identify as Trans. This isn’t just a policy conversation, but a family conversation. And not just for me, but for millions of Americans on every side of the political aisle. The struggles that the LGBTQ community faces in our society is real.&nbsp;The Principle: I believe everyone is created in the image of God, and that all humans have the same level of value and dignity (Genesis 1:27).The Problem: In our society, a major way we communicate the value, respect, and dignity everyone has is by giving equal access to resources such as housing, healthcare, employment, etc. Unfortunately, those within the LGBTQ community are not guaranteed equal access to resources because of their gender identity or sexual orientation. There is also tension between certain faith-based communities and some in the LGBTQ Community over what rights should be protected.The Policy Proposal:&nbsp;ALL human beings deserve equal access to resources.&nbsp;<ol><li>I would work to amend the Civil Rights Act, which would ensure equal access to resources for the LGBTQ+ community. This is not a discussion about affirming or denouncing the views of a given community, it is about us providing all human beings with equal protections under the law.</li><li>It’s important that we build peace between LGBTQ+ citizens and faith-based communities to ensure that the LGBTQ+ get equal protections under the law while also granting respect and protection to people of faith, houses of worship and faith-based organizations with sincerely held religious beliefs. Those with sincerely held religious beliefs are different from extremists like the Wilks Brothers, Tim Dunn, and other organizations that manipulate and weaponize their “faith” to oppress people.</li></ol>

LGBTQ+ Protections/Religious Liberty

The Person: As a young, black man, I have interacted with the criminal justice system through personal experience. These interactions with law enforcement, both my own and those of my community, have given me insight into the areas that are working but also the areas that need to be improved in our criminal justice system. I believe that law enforcement plays an important and needed role in our society and there is certainly room for improvement in our criminal justice system with how law enforcement interacts with the community.The Principle: My faith leads me to believe that people should be held accountable for their actions (Romans 13:2-5). But my faith also leads me to believe that every human being can be restored and rehabilitated.&nbsp;The Problem: The relationship between law enforcement and too many communities in our state is fractured. Many people in our society distrust law enforcement. This distrust does not just apply to police officers on the ground but to the system as a whole.&nbsp;Our country spends $80 billion on incarceration annually. A lot of these dollars are dedicated to non-violent offenders who either should not be serving time in prison as their punishment or have a sentence that does not match their crime. There is also low morale within law enforcement agencies around the state and throughout the nation, which can lead to poor performance. In 1994, law enforcement agencies were paid more money if they increased their prison population. This is a backward and broken way to think about the role of prisons in our societies.The Policy Proposal:I will support and advocate for legislation that addresses the systemic issues in our criminal justice system from a holistic perspective. I would like to see legislation that does the following:&nbsp;<ol><li>Provides funding for states that are able to reduce their prison population without an increase in crime</li><li>Supports local and state law enforcement agencies in establishing clear guidelines that help agencies focus on the most dangerous populations that commit violent crimes while encouraging rehabilitative practices for non-violent offenders&nbsp;</li><li>Creates grants for organizations and businesses led by formerly incarcerated individuals.</li><li>Establishes programming to increase morale among local and state law enforcement agencies.</li><li>Bans Private Prisons that help corporations make money by having more people in prison.</li><li>Eliminate Immigrant Detention Quotas.</li></ol>

Criminal Justice Reform

The Person:Born and raised in Houston, I have a lot of experience interacting with the energy industry. I have family members that work in the industry and have collaborated with energy companies through my work in the non-profit sector .&nbsp;The Principle:There is a care that God desires for us to have for Earth. We are supposed to be caretakers of the world we exist in (Genesis 2:15). We are supposed to be good stewards of the natural resources that have been provided to us.The Problem:Over 2 million Texans have jobs that are supported, directly or indirectly, by the energy industry. As I travel the state, one concern I consistently hear is how people are worried about losing their oil and gas jobs, which will take away their ability to put food on the table for their family.The Policy Proposal:<ol><li>I will support legislation to help the United States become energy independent.&nbsp;</li><li>We need to promote Texas oil and gas in a way that keeps our workforce intact while reducing emissions.&nbsp;</li><li>Any long-term legislation should be focused on developing cleaner, more affordable, and renewable energy.</li></ol>

Energy

The Person:This is one of our country’s most sensitive and divisive topics. As a man, I will never be able to understand what women have to deal with as they live life on a daily basis- menstruation, menopause, or the anxiety when trying to conceive. As a son to a mother that has had fertility issues and suffered an ectopic pregnancy and as a husband to a wife that recently had a miscarriage post the overturning of Roe v. Wade, this is an issue I’ve had to deal with personally.&nbsp;The Principle:My faith leads me to believe that no life is greater than the other. We should fight to ensure that everyone is treated equally from conception (Psalm 139:13-16).The Problem:We need A New Way Forward in our conversation on Abortion. Our country has been stuck in gridlock for the last 50 years on the issue.&nbsp; There are two current camps within our political landscape: Pro-Life, which argues it’s rooted in a desire to protect life. And&nbsp; Pro-Choice, which believes that only a woman should have control over her own body.I’ll tell you what I believe: Both the Pro-Life and Pro-Choice labels do not allow us to have a real and honest conversation about the issue. I believe that life exists inside of a woman’s womb. I believe that there should be protections for women who have been victims of rape or incest, when medically recommended (e.g. terminal illness) or when the life of the mother (e.g. Kate Cox) is involved. I believe that we should be working to reduce the abortion rate in our country and in our state. I believe that having a legitimate social safety net for women is the best way of reducing abortions in our country.My advocacy for life in the womb is not out of a desire to take rights away from women, it is an attempt to advocate for life that is not yet able to advocate for itself.&nbsp;I believe that most Republicans are not truly Pro-Life because their advocacy is limited to the unborn. My “Women Deserve Better” platform is only consistent if I advocate for the girl in the womb the same way I advocate for women outside the womb.The Policy Proposal:There are 6 policy goals I will fight for:<ol><li>Preventing unintended pregnancies by increasing access to contraception and sex education.</li><li>Supporting maternal and child health by eliminating the cost of prenatal care and making childbirth free.</li><li>Opening up pathways of economic and social opportunity for women &amp; mothers by working to end pregnancy discrimination in the workplace.</li><li>Holding men accountable because the burden in abortion conversations is always — unfairly — on the women. I would work to create grant funding for local communities to have an Office on Father, Men, and Boys and continue the work started by President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper.</li><li>Promoting healthy relationships by establishing programming in local communities where couples can access therapy at no cost.</li><li>Strengthening adoption and foster care systems by decreasing adoption costs, increasing funding and adding further accountability in our foster care system.&nbsp;</li></ol>

Pro-Choice? Yes. Pro-Life? Also, Yes.

The Person: Growing up in Houston, my parents were not always able to afford child care. After my parents divorced, they had to figure out where I would attend school. I have vivid memories of my dad verbally processing where I would go after school that day and trying to make the logistics work in his head. My mom would sometimes take me to the hair salon where she worked.&nbsp; This wasn’t convenient for her or for me. But she didn’t have any other alternative. My wife, Gloria, and her family also struggled with child care when she was growing up. Her mom would pick her up and they would go back to the home Gloria’s mom was cleaning. That’s where Gloria would do her homework until they went back home together.&nbsp;The Principle: Children are a blessing from the Lord (Psalm 127:3) and the Bible is clear that children should be protected. We should be striving to create an environment where children are able to grow and maximize their potential. The primary responsibility to raise a child is a parent but the Bible is clear that this responsibility is not ONLY on the parent.&nbsp;The Problem: In Texas, the annual cost of child care is often over $10,000 per child. Studies state that infant care for one child would take up 15.7% of a median family’s income in Texas. The Federal Government has defined “affordable child care” as being 7% or less of your income. The majority of families in Texas do not have access to affordable child care. And even if they can afford it, too many still can’t access&nbsp; child care. Over 50% of counties in Texas are deemed child care deserts. Child care workers do not earn a living wage, with an average income of just&nbsp; $26,000 a year. A weak child care system affects so many other industries as well. Almost 40% of small business owners reported that having to schedule work hours around their employee’s child care needs “<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/4-reasons-the-u-s-economy-needs-comprehensive-child-care/">negatively affected workers’ ability to fulfill job-related commitments.</a>”The Policy Proposal: Your location or your income should not determine whether you are able to have child care for your family. I’ll fight for legislation that does the following:<ol><li>Creates universal access to child care through the creation of a child care system that is supported by the federal government, but operated and run by local nonprofits, community-based organizations, and faith based institutions.</li><li>Ensures affordability by creating a cap of how much a family making under $250,000 a year has to pay for child care.&nbsp;</li><li>Invests in child care workers, because they deserve a living wage for their caregiving work.</li><li>Honors parent preference by providing a variety of child care options such as: home based, faith-based, traditional daycare centers, among others.</li></ol>

Access to Child Care for All

The Person:Much of my professional career including most recently as a nonprofit executive providing home repairs has been dedicated to serving seniors. Our seniors have given a lot to our country, state, and communities and there is a responsibility we have to honor them with our policies.&nbsp;The Principle:In Psalm 71:9, the Psalmist states that he does not want God to abandon him when he is of old age. God answers that prayer throughout scripture as He demonstrates that His care and value for us isn’t dependent on our age or living conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Problem:Seniors are not able to live comfortably because of the lack of investment from politicians. I specifically want to address Social Security because I believe this is one of the issues that highlights how broken our system is. If you’re a billionaire, you get to pay less than 1% of your income to Social Security. However, if you’re an everyday Texan making $50,000 then you have to pay 6.2% of your income. Everyday folks having to pay more for Social Security than billionaires for Social Security is wrong. In addition, the fixed income that many of our seniors live off of is not enough to pay for increasing utility bills and a higher cost of living.The Policy Proposal:1. I will introduce legislation to remove the FICA cap of $182,000 on Social Security so that billionaires aren’t paying a lower percentage of their income to Social Security than everyday folks.&nbsp;2. I’ll work to provide seniors who are living on fixed incomes with financial assistance on utility bills so that they can live comfortably without worrying about not being able to keep the lights on because the electricity and water bill is too high.

Protecting Seniors and Social Security

The Person:During my time as a non-profit executive providing home repairs, a population I worked heavily with were Veterans. We would provide home repairs but it would also reveal the many ways our country has negatively treated veterans upon arrival back home or after leaving service.The Principle: Soldiers are deserving of our respect as human beings but also as servants in government that carry a responsibility to . This is a principle that is reflected in Jesus’ interaction with soldiers as well as other places in the Bible. (Matthew 8:5-13)The Problem: Texas Veterans’ have been largely abandoned by our elected officials and politicians. Our state ranks in the bottom half in the country in Veterans’ care and as I’ve traveled throughout Texas to places like Carrizo Springs, San Angelo, and Center, veterans have shared that it is hard accessing resources.&nbsp;The Policy Proposal:<ol><li>I’ll introduce legislation to provide federal funding so that every county has a County Veterans Service Officer. There should be someone in each county dedicated to serving veterans that live within that county.&nbsp;</li><li>We should not be picking and choosing which Veterans get healthcare. Republicans have led the state for the last 29 years, but politicians on both sides of the aisle have dropped the ball when it comes to rural Texas, the folks who supply our food, fuel, fiber. In order to have a strong Texas, rural Texas HAS to be strong. Where rural Texas goes, so goes the state economically, politically, and historically. If we don’t have a healthy and strong rural population, Texas runs the risk of failure. We understand that rural Texans live throughout the state and represent many facets Texas. There is diversity of race, industry, and geography in the different rural parts of Texas. <h2>10. Right to farm&nbsp;</h2>Our nation’s family farms and small producers deserve a greater share of the food dollars. Currently far too much of all profits are bypassing these communities and going straight to international corporations. The Farm Bill needs to restore fair and open markets for ranchers, strengthen local food systems and the farm safety net while cutting red tape to access resources. Texas ranchers and farmers need to continue being leaders in the production of our nation’s food, fuel, and fiber.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>9. Right to strong leadership</h2>We must allocate special investments for rural communities to support new generations of leaders, via management and leadership training programs, in order to shape and develop leadership centered around a vision for a prosperous Rural America.

<h2>11. Right to affordable housing</h2>Housing availability and affordability should be prioritized to ensure anyone who is threatened to leave rural communities because of the threat of private development can be protected in their desire to keep and/or afford their home. Corporate profits should never come at the expense of our rural communities' well-being.

<h2>8. Right to fully funded public schools </h2>We must fully fund Public Schools to provide stability for students, parents, and teachers, and to also establish our schools as hubs in rural communities. They educate our children, but can also be the center of all social services and workforce development opportunities, including certificates and training in craftsmanship and trade skills. Vouchers are of no use in rural Texas when there are no “school choices” and districts are fighting to keep their schools open.

Right to own land without the threat of private development taking your property</h2>Generational landowners should never be forced to cede property in the name of private development from mega-corporations. No company, no matter how deep their pockets, should ever have more claim to your family’s land in the name of corporate profits than you and your family. Generational landowners should also be protected from unfair taxation that threatens their ability to pass on land, and general rural wealth, to the next generation.
